A paradise born from a meeting between an exceptional place and a millennial people of the sea.
Manga Bay Lodge was built around a simple and deep intention: to offer much more than accommodation. On the southwest coast of Madagascar, between endemic dry forest and coral reefs, the lodge integrates into the landscape of the lagoon and the people who have protected it for centuries.
Here, each bungalow opens onto a turquoise expanse that only the outrigger canoes of Vezo fishermen cross at dawn. This rare setting, both wild and intimately human, is our promise to every traveler who joins us.
Authentic tourism. Local gastronomy. Cultural sharing. Three commitments at the heart of Manga Bay Lodge’s identity.

The Vezo, “nomads of the sea”, are one of the 18 ethnic groups of Madagascar, established for millennia along more than 300 kilometers of the southwest coast. Their language has no word for “to fish”: they simply call it “to seek food”, “mizaha hanina”, revealing their deeply organic relationship with the ocean.
Manga Bay Lodge has chosen to be part of this territory with humility, by building an authentic partnership with local Vezo fishermen. Their morning catch arrives directly in our kitchen. Their canoe can become your window onto the lagoon.
“For the Vezo, the sea is a nurturing mother. We only take what we need. Taking more would offend the forces of the ocean.”
Symbol of the Vezo civilization, the canoe is carved from a farafatse trunk, a wood as light as balsa measuring between 2 and 8 meters. Its square sail, its bright colors and its perfect balance are the result of a know-how unchanged for generations. For a Vezo, it is worth more than his house.
While the men go out in canoes with line, net or harpoon, women and children wait for low tide to walk across the reef flat, collecting octopus, sea urchins and shells. The sea belongs to the whole community. Everyone knows the techniques, passed down from childhood without ever being written.
Vezo tradition teaches that their people descend from the union of a fisherman and a mermaid. Spirits inhabit the waters : those of the drowned wander there. One must never go to sea after an argument with one’s father, nor take more than needed. These fady (taboos) are rules of life, not simple superstitions.

The seafood that arrives on your plate was caught this morning by Vezo fishermen from the nearby village. No intermediaries, just the sea at its most direct.
The lagoon is our shared heritage. Manga Bay Lodge commits to never taking more than what the ecosystem can regenerate, in line with ancestral Vezo wisdom.
Our local guides are Vezo. Our canoe excursions are led by fishermen. Each exchange is a real encounter, not a staged tourist experience.
Our recruitment prioritizes local inhabitants. By choosing Manga Bay, you directly support the local economy and the preservation of a millennial culture.
